Flooding and Destruction in Carolina Beach, Useless Skills, and Naomi’s Under a Rock Review of “Donnie Brasco” | Podcast Episode 91

A flooded street in Carolina Beach after PTC 8

Welcome to another episode of Luke and Naomi On-Air: The Podcast. Thank you for joining us for episode 91.

We’ve been off for a couple of weeks taking a mini-vacation, but we’ll tell you all about that in just a little bit. If you’re new to Luke and Naomi On-Air, well first of all, welcome! We’re a married morning show team, that has brought our radio show to the internet-waves. We have a topic each week, cover various stories, and we have Naomi’s Under a Rock Review. Luke has seen all the movies, Naomi has not (not even the classics that everyone has seen). So relive your first watch of these movies through Naomi’s eyes. We’ve got a crime/mobster movie for this week’s review, but we’ll get to that later.

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks. We took of time for labor day (and our mini-vacation), but we also had some technical difficulties after dealing with an Atlantic storm. So we got hit with PTC 8, or “Potential Tropical Cyclone 8,” which ended up being quite a storm (and maybe should have been named). The ended up calling it a thousand year storm considering all the rain it dropped in and around Wilmington and Southeastern North Carolina. Southport, was hit with 22.89 inches within 48 hours! Absolutely insane. There was a lot of flooding, especially in Carolina Beach, where we just took our mini-vacation less than two weeks earlier. Places we visitied and hungout at, are now temporarily closed. We lucked out, though. Where we are located in Wilmington, we had some big puddles, some water on the roadways, but nothing like what most people had to deal with. Some roadways were completely washed away! You can hear more about the storm in the podcast video at the bottom of this page.

Speaking of Carolina Beach, that’s where we decided to take our little getaway. We spent two nights, right on the main grab and got to play tourist in our own area. It was a LOT of fun! We ate at some delicious restaurants like Havana’s and the Gulfstream. We checked out a bunch of bars and hangouts. We even walked down to Carolina Beach Pier (which was a lot further than we realized), and spent some time in the arcade on the boardwalk. Make sure you look under our “Photos and Videos” section for the full gallery of pictures. We’ll have that up for you next!

It’s been a while, but we need to give you an update on the salsa garden. Bad news, the tomatoes didn’t survive. We don’t know what happened! They grew so well, they were so tall and looked so good, but they just never produced. It was a sad day when we had to get rid of them. But the good news? Our jalapeno peppers have produced! At first we had just this little cute pepper, and we thought it was the only one we were going to get. But now, we’ve found another, and there are a bunch of green buds under all the flowers. We’ve got peppers!

Alright, let’s get into some stories. We talk about skills that people who were born before 2000 have, that are now useless. Things like the ability to read a map or being able to parallel park without a backup camera. Check out the full list in the podcast episode below. We also discuss the Ig Nobel Prizes, which are basically the Razzies for the scientific community. And of course Luke has your random facts – Your recurrent dose of “Did You Know.”

Now it’s time for Naomi’s Under a Rock Review. She sits down and watches the 1997 film starring Johnny Depp and Al Pacino, “Donnie Brasco.” Does she like the movie? How does it hold up to the Simpson’s episode based completely on this movie? And does she see the ending coming? Find out these answers and more, in the podcast episode here:
