A Pumpkin Mystery, Taco Bell’s Ultramarathon, and Naomi’s Under a Rock Review of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” | Podcast Episode 119

Carved Pumpkins on a Table

Welcome to another episode of Luke and Naomi On-Air: The Podcast. This week, we discuss a pumpkin mystery at a college, a grueling 31-mile run that includes multiple stops at Taco Bell during the race, and Naomi has another Under A Rock Review for you. Thanks for joining us!

If you’re new to Luke and Naomi, thanks for checking us out! We’re a former morning show team that have moved from the airwaves to the internet. We still do some of our features from our morning show – Interesting stories we share, random facts with our recurrent dose of “Did You Know,” and Luke always leaves us with a laugh with his dad jokes. But we’ve also added some new tidbits including segments like our “Sips and Snacks” video series and Naomi’s Under a Rock Reviews – relive your first watch of classic movies like “Ghostbusters,” “Rocky,” and “Neverending Story,” through Naomi’s eyes. We’ll have another exciting review for you, as Naomi watches Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” for the first time.

But before we get to that review, we have a few things to get to…

We’ve been talking a lot about “The Caribbean Surf Connection.” This is an amazing organization in the Dominican Republic that helps kids learn life skills and gives them a better life, through surfing. While we were vacationing in the DR earlier this year, we met Jorge, the organizer of this foundation and spoke with him about the issues these young kids are facing and what they’re doing to help.

For the last couple of years, we’ve been hosting our “Not-So-Polar Plunge” on New Years’ Day and jumping into the Atlantic Ocean to kick off the new year. We usually ask that you donate to a charity that’s near-and-dear to your heart, but this year, we’re asking that you help us raise money for “The Caribbean Surf Connection.” It costs $175 to sponsor a child – This covers the cost of travel, food, and entry fees. And we would like to sponsor as many children as we possibly can!

This is a unique organization, and there’s a million great charities out there raising money for kids and helping them get an education and food in their bellies, but this foundation is helping children learn skills to help them grow into adults and members of their community, and is keeping them away from violence and an otherwise complicated future.

Please consider helping us raise money for this great cause. We’re asking you to donate and join our “Not-So-Polar Plunge.” Jump in the water with us in Wilmington, North Carolina on New Year’s Day, plunge in the water closest to you if you’re not in our area, or opt-out and watch our live stream of the fun!

We’ll be collecting donations through Venmo. You can send your donations to @Naomi-Lynn-34 (please include a comment that this is for the “Not-So-Polar Plunge” or a donation for “The Surf Connection”).

We’ll start collecting donations now, and keep you updated as we raise money over the next couple of months for this great organization. You can also get more information on The Caribbean Surf Connection here.

And if you have any questions or want more information, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You can send us an email directly here.

Let’s talk about this pumpkin mystery. Apparently, every year at a university in Montana, a pumpkin is stuck on top of a spire high above the campus’ main hall. Now, this isn’t like someone easily climbed on the roof and placed it up there. This is REALLY high. And dangerous. And it’s been going on for more than 30 years! Nobody knows who is doing it or how it gets up there every year, but it’s always there. University officials were worried whoever is doing this (or the group that’s doing this) is going to get hurt or possibly killed falling off the roof, so they decided they were going to put the pumpkin on the spire themselves. But here’s the kicker, the prankster(s) keep beating them to it! They end up putting the pumpkin up there before the university has the opportunity to do so. Check out the full story in the podcast at the bottom of this page.

Running a marathon (or further) is already a challenge in itself. You have to train for months, even years to get your body ready to handle that kind of pressure and stress. What if someone were to add in Taco Bell to the mix? If you haven’t heard of this INSANE race, yes, it is a real thing. And it’s more than a marathon. And it’s more than a meal at Taco Bell – It’s nine! So this crazy 50k (yep, that’s right 50k. 31 miles), race happens annually in Denver. Not only are you running an extreme length, but the course also have 10 Taco Bell stops, at which you must visit nine of them, and you must order something off the menu. And if you think you can just order a taco and all it a day, you’re wrong. According to the rules of this race, by the fourth stop you must have something quite substantial like the crunchwrap or chalupa supreme. This crazy race started from a simple joke, but over the years it has grown and now over 1,000 participants have signed up! Naomi is sure she could train for this and now wants to add it to her bucket list, and Luke can’t believe her confidence in such an senseless challenge. Get the full details in the podcast below, and let us know what you think – Do you think Naomi could train for something like this? Should she attempt it? Is it absolutely asinine? Leave a note in the “comments section” at the bottom of this page and join the conversation!

And now it’s that time. We’re talking about Naomi’s Under a Rock Review. As we get closer to Halloween, we’re getting into some suspenseful, thrilling, and otherwise horror-themed films. This week, Naomi wanted to watch a classic – Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.” Without knowing pretty much anything about the movie (besides the famous shower scene), she jumps in. What did she think of the movie? Does it hold up to the hair-raising, spooky movies we have today? What did she dislike about the movie? And who stole the show? Get these answers and more in this week’s podcast episode, right here:
