What started as two people’s passion for radio, grew into a morning show team that then evolved into Luke and Naomi On-Air: The Podcast. This podcast is the result of years in the industry, both separately and together. It brings pieces of what Luke and Naomi have done in numerous radio positions, together and has formed into what you hear now.
The Podcast
The podcast is set up a lot like their old morning show. There are features you would normally hear on the airwaves like your “Recurrent Dose of Did You Know,” “This Week in Science,” and a topic that’s discussed and includes audience participation. But they have added more like “Naomi’s Under a Rock Review,” which has become a main feature of their podcast. “Naomi’s Under a Rock Review” is a segment where Naomi reviews movies that you’ve probably already seen. While broadcasting a morning show in New Mexico it had become apparent that Naomi didn’t understand most movie references whenever the discussion included them. She would continuously say “I live under a rock,” and she would admit to only watching a handful of movies over and over again. This spawned the idea for her to watch all the classics like “Ghostbusters,” “Tombstone,” “Robin Hood,” “Rocky,” and more, and then review them.
Another added feature to the podcast is “Sips and Snacks.” This specific segment also has its own stand-alone video. Luke and Naomi visit their favorite Wilmington Bottle Shop, Fermental, and meet with Ashley Rogers to pair snacks with beer and wine. We’re talking good snacks too, all your favorites like Cheetos, pizza rolls, popcorn, different candy bars and treats… Basically, any snack you can imagine. Ashley uses his expansive beer and wine knowledge to find the perfect beer and wine to pair with these everyday goodies. Sometimes the pairings are strange or unique but they’re always good! Luke and Naomi are now striving for the day they stump Ashley, but that day may not actually come.
The podcast is continuing to change and grow. New features will be added, and others may fade away, but Luke and Naomi will continue recording. This is their passion. This is what they are dedicated to doing.
Luke
Before the Luke and Naomi On-Air Podcast, and before they were a morning show duo, Luke had other jobs before finding his passion for radio. Luke spent his early days bartending weddings, working retail, and even driving a school bus. This wasn’t cutting it for Luke though, and he wanted a career, so he went back to school for broadcasting and journalism. While in school, Luke had a regular on-air slot on his college radio station. Actually, he took that role at two different colleges, SUNY Oswego and Utica College, both in Central New York. After graduating, Luke was hired at WIBX a news/talk radio station in Utica, New York, run by Townsquare Media. Luke was a reporter and covered news updates for that station.
Shortly after that, Luke found himself on the FMs, covering on-air shifts on Big Frog 104, Lite 98.7, and The Eagle. In time he landed a role as the midday host on Big frog 104 where his career really began to take off. Luke ran contests, broadcasted live on location, and became one of the faces of the station. He also participated in Big Frog’s fundraising efforts and grew with the station.
Naomi
Naomi started her radio journey back in 2009 but had a passion for the industry at a young age. After being dual enrolled in high school and Macomb Community College for introduction radio broadcasting classes, she made the transition to Specs Howard School of Media Arts. Naomi graduated with a radio diploma and shortly after was hired at a small station in Port Huron, Michigan, WBTI. She started as a weekend on-air personality, but learned everything she could during her time at WBTI, moving up to the night show host. She also board-operated sports games, was the backup for the News Department and the Production Department, became the Assistant Imagining Director, and would cover on-air shifts on any of the other stations in the building. She also would broadcast live on location and help out with fundraising efforts and donation drives.
After a plateau in her career at WBTI, Naomi took a radio position in Utica, New York as the midday host of Lite 98.7. Less than a year into her position she added morning show co-host to her job description. She wrote daily blogs, created entertaining videos, helped create contests and promotional ideas, and took over the station’s website and Facebook page.
Luke and Naomi On-Air
Luke and Naomi met while working together in Utica, New York. They became friends and started dating shortly after. They spent a couple of years working in the same building, but not on the same station. It looked like the chance to do a show together wasn’t going to become available where they were, so they decided to move on. The duo packed their bags and moved to Roswell, New Mexico to work at KBIM – The Country Giant. There, Naomi took over Program Director and Music Director responsibilities and Luke took over Production Director tasks. The two hosted their highly interactive morning show for a few years, growing the station and building its presence and reputation in the community.
Unfortunately, as much as Luke and Naomi loved running a radio station together and putting their heart and soul into the work they were doing Roswell, New Mexico is pretty far out from everything the two knew, and they started getting anxious to get back to the east coast where their family and friends still lived. After the tough decision to move away from Roswell, Luke and Naomi found themselves in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Now, Luke works as the Promotions Director for Sunrise Broadcasting in Wilmington and also hosts middays on Sunny 103.7. Naomi has taken a job as an Assistant Community Manager at an apartment complex.
Because Luke and Naomi missed recording a show together they decided to start the podcast, and Luke and Naomi On-Air: The Podcast was born.
